OSS: Just for fun

This page introduces OSS intended for fun and creativity.

Open source softwares from operating systems to word processors work for me. My transition was initially a merely practical one, but because of one computer crisis, my understanding of and interaction with software has completely changed. I relish being nearly corporation-free in my computing. The price fits my student budget. A thriving online community ensures someone will hear me when I identify a problem, request a fix, or suggest something new. But, OSS supports not only for-work computing, but also creativity and leisure.

Ideally you'll try out open source softwares for yourself without a computer crisis necessitating a reevaluation of your needs. As a purely non-stressful, non-academic starting point, I suggest a download of Inkscape and having some fun drawing. Read the FAQ, browse the galleries wiki, query the net for why it works and why it doesn’t. Alternatively, you can read this comic created entirely with Inkscape, Jellyfish Dessert. Try searching for a software you need on Source Forge, pick one, and then try it out. Find out for yourself what open source is all about and why it’s great; your own answers will be infinitely better than mine.
